Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v South Woodham 2nd on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts

Match report On a windy day at Pheasant Park, chief tosser Gav was successful again and decided to put our opponents in to bat.

South Woodham got off to a very breezy start, racking up 57 runs in the first 10 overs, due to a mix of characteristically loose bowling by myself and S. Curtin being dropped by Gav behind the stumps off the bowling of Sam, who decided to make haste shortly after. It was the introduction of the 2's Grandad Tommy Payne that secured the breakthrough, a fine catch by Flash sharply to his left. Despite Tom keeping things tight from his end and me finally finding the ability to bowl, a few dropped catches and shoddy ground fielding meant that the real Woodham were left increasingly frustrated.

The dangerous S. Curtin finally holed out on 41 on life number 4, a good catch on the boundary by Chris providing the opening we needed. 2 became 3 shortly afterward when Chris took his second catch of the match in my last over, finally being rewarded after what can be described as a rather unlucky spell. Flash wasted no time snaring two quick wickets and with Tom picking up his second towards the end of a very economical and threatening spell, the South Woodham innings really started to falter.

A few overs later the innings would be over, with Chris coming on for his first League bowl of the season and showing the skipper what he had been missing. The South Woodham batsmen had no answer to Chris' toe crunching yorkers from above the sightscreen, taking 4-11 off of just 3.1 overs. Congratulations to the two Collis', somehow being involved in 9 out of the 10 dismissals in the innings, a stat I'm sure South Woodham wouldn't have looked back too fondly on, 125 all out!

After a traditionally large Ollie Glasson tea (cheers Aldi), Woodham started off carefully in our chase of 126 in the first few overs, before Gav was caught by a combination of first and second slip performing their finest juggling act. That brought Mark to the crease, hoping to make up for his 3 drops in the field. Tom and (less so) Mark played watchfully, putting away the bad balls and providing a useful partnership of 40 before Tom was caught trying to pull at square leg for 18. A now rather vocal South Woodham felt an opportunity to get back into the game, however Ollie quickly started to take the game away from them, taking no time at all before tucking into the opposition bowling and leaving us at 73-2 at drinks.

Despite Mark being bowled for 30 the following over and John falling victim to the return of the opening bowler, Ollie continued to get us closer to the target. By the time he departed on nelson for a well constructed 35, Woodham only needed another 15 runs to win. Nick (19*) and Jared (2*) did so relatively comfortably.

Another good win for the Woodham 2s, bouncing back from a very quick start by the oppo in challenging conditions and seeing the game home with no batting collapse in sight, which keeps us on the heels of the top 3. Away to Canvey next week captained by yours truly, who will hopefully do better than my previous effort on Sunday, don't bother looking at the scorecard.
