Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v High Roding on Sat 11 Aug 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 2 wkts

Match report A second successive 100 from Dan Smith was the standout performance for the 1's as they edged out High Roding in a close encounter, winning the game with just 2 wkts and 5 balls remaining.

After the rigours and joys of Toby Pateman cricket week (TM) it was back to league action. Putting the visitors into bat upon winning the toss, early wickets for Wright, Pateman and Verlander reduced High Roding to 46-3. A lengthy partnership between Gilfrin (74 no) and Pilcher (72) was the cornerstone of the High Roding innings - as the pair batted for the bulk of the allotted overs. Late success for Rowan Clark helped to finally pick up the wicket of Pilcher, aided by some juggling involving Jack Shipton's highly toned pectoral muscle, shortly followed by Duke without score. Gilfrin remained undefeated throughout and his well crafted 74 helped the visitors to a challenging 195-5 at the close.

The early loss of Ollie Glasson, sharply stumped by Gallian off medium pacer Morley-Jacob did little to deter the momentum of the run chase which moved serenely to 59 until Manoj (16) was trapped in front of a delivery from off spinner Clarke. Batsmen came and batsmen went, but the crucial constant was Dan Smith, who not only supplied a fine tea, was busily feasting on the visitors bowling. A crucial sixth wicket partnership between Dan and Rowan (with an e) took the hosts closer. When Rowan departed for 21, 33 were still required at a run a ball. Toby Pateman helped to reduce the target further with a quick fire 11, though he departed with four needed to win and eight balls remaining;

A couple of byes took the game to the brink, two to win from the final six balls. Fittingly, it was Dan who hit four from the first delivery of the final over, winning the game and bringing his 100 up in the process.

An excellent and much needed win in a really tight division, and one that leaves the 1's in sixth place going into the final three matches of the season. We visit Eastwood next Saturday, who themselves are on an excellent run and moving away from the relegation spots.

Until next week..
