Burnham Sports v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 26 May 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 6 wkts

Match report The 1’s got back to winning ways down by the seaside with a good six wicket win at Burnham.

Winning the toss for the fourth consecutive time, visiting skipper Wright inserted the hosts. It may have taken a few overs to strike, but both Wright and John Marshall got amongst the wickets, removing an opener apiece as Burnham went from 22-0 to Richie Benaud’s personal favourite, 22-2.

Whilst runs were not exactly flowing off the blades of Burnham bats, it took a change of bowling for the game to shift to the Pheasants. With his very first ball, Roger Marshall got one to nip back to clean bowl Whittaker (19) just as he began to look comfortable at the crease. A similar quality delivery also accounted for Hamilton, as the hosts started to wobble. Roger, in partnership with George Verlander at the other end plugged away well, giving little away between them, backed up by some excellent ground fielding, particularly in the covers region, where Toby Pateman and Pete Harness were stationed.

George was the next one to get in on the action as Silvester mistimed a lofted drive, picking out former Burnham star Jack Shipton, who made no mistake with the catch. By the time both had struck again, R Whittaker (17) to a sharp catch at point by Manoj Triapthi and G Smith (7), picking out namesake Dan at mid-wicket, Burnham had eroded to 92-7.

Some resilience came in the shape of Bridge (29) and Saunders (12) who put on 43 for the eighth wicket. The stand was eventually broken by Keith Mitchell, who lured Bridge into chipping to Toby at extra cover. John returned to claim his second wicket, a well-judged catch by Pete, but that elusive final wicket just would not come, Burnham finishing their overs on 142-9.

The run chase did not exactly start as was desired, as Nigel Costin managed to find slip, departing without score. However, Toby, joined by Dan, then embarked on a tremendous second wicket partnership, gradually getting on top of the opening bowling pair of Whittaker and Bridge to score freely, finding the right balance of patience and attacking stroke play. The victory target was getting closer into view little past the halfway mark, when Dan, who had gone past 50, surprisingly missed a full toss to depart – bowled for an excellent 61. Toby followed almost straightaway, falling to Hamilton for a valuable 43.
Any thoughts of a mini-collapse were soon put to bed by Manoj (17) and Pete (14no), though a bizarre run-out curtailed Manoj’s innings.

Fittingly, it was left to former fans favourite Shippo to take the 1’s to victory, the square cut not quite making it all the way to the fence, but yielding the 3 runs needed for victory, with nearly 15 overs remaining.
An excellent win with a number of good performances with bat, ball and in the field.

We now sit fourth in the early standings, with next week’s visitors, South Weald, up in second, a chance to climb further up the Div 2 table.

Until next week..
