Purleigh v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 23 Aug 2014 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 7 wkts

Match report Missing a few regulars, the 1's still arrived at near neighbours Purleigh with a strong side, ready to keep the promotion pot boiling into the final week.

Inserted on a greentop, the reuniting of the Rod Brazier/Matt Goodlad partnership again bore fruit, the pair putting on another 50 partnership, particularly feasting on the short pitch offerings from opening bowler John.

The pair had pushed the score to 65 from 18 overs when change bowler Cheek had Goodlad caught at mid-off for 38. Next delivery was a beauty, swinging in late to bowl Ian Ball. 65-0 had become 65-2 in 2 balls as the visitors went from domination to dominos.

The carnage continued, as Cheek continued to wreak havoc, ably supported by Wilson and a compliant WMCC mid-order as wickets tumbled with alarming regularity, especially when Brazier departed for 37 - as batsman 3-11 were able to muster 30 runs between them. 118 all out from 36.1 overs.

Early wickets, particularly both Bowles and Freegaard could have made for an interesting second innings. Knowing that they had nearly 55 overs to get the runs required, they were able to be watchful and wait for scoring opportunities. As with the WMCC innings, the change bowlers grabbed the wickets and bowled with more penetration. Craig Marshall took the first wicket, Freegaard for 40, a good low catch in the covers by Goodlad. Kev Wright took two late wickets - Taylor (11) and Cann (2) - to ensure that the day was not a pointless one, but Bowles (39*) remained at the crease to see the home side through to a deserved 7 wicket victory.

A disappointing way for the promotion bubble to be burst, especially as results elsewhere were favourable. However, the Achilles heel that has been the ability to consistently generate scores with the bat was in evidence again yesterday.

Nevertheless with many changes made to the side for the 2014 campaign, the return to Div 4 has been an enjoyable one, and next year a tilt at promotion may be more than a flirtation.

The league season draws to a close next Saturday, as champions Goresbrook visit Pheasant Park.
