Terling (First Round CUP) v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club INDOOR BDICL 1ST SIX on Sun 02 Feb 2014 at 8:30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 6 runs

Match report The road to Wembley kicked off for the 1’s as they took on old foes Terling in the much coveted BDICL Cup.

Another unsuccessful toss (Terling called correctly) the 1’s were inserted onto the flat deck that is Braintree Leisure Centre. The opening partnership of Ball & Beames, which has so far flourished in Div 1, continued in the same vein against the Div 3 opponents as they built a solid foundation to the innings. After a succession of 3’s, Ball counted to 24 before chipping former Woodie Roger Marshall for 6 to retire on 30. Beames wasn’t too far behind, also retiring for 27.

With the platform established, there was something for the big guns of Hayman, Wright & Shaw to build upon.

Hayman set about launching every ball into orbit, and if the roof had not been present then one of the quickest retirements would have been achieved. Unfortunately for the flame haired assassin, in indoor cricket, hitting the ceiling earns just one run.

Undeterred, Connor blitzed the roof, ceiling lights and occasionally the back wall to keep the run rate ticking over. Skipper Wright joined in to take the score past 100 – eventually, finishing without the loss of a wicket, on a 10 an over, 119-0, Hayman 23*, Wright 20*.

If the absence of wickets in the first innings was unusual, then 5 run outs in the second was also a strange feat. In the face of some tight bowling from Shaw, Mitchell, Wright & Hayman, Terling had to take some risks – some more suicidal than others, presenting regular opportunities that WMCC took advantage of, with well timed run-outs, all achieved at the non-strikers end.

The regularity of falling wickets stemmed progress, and though last pairing Woolfenden & Tompkin threatened to take the game right to the wire, ultimately 30 from 2 overs and 16 from 1 over proved too tall an order, Terling finishing 6 runs short on 113-5.

A good all round performance to gain a victory against a decent side irrespective of their league status – creating enough pressure that enabled us to see out a tight game. Second division Rayne are up next in the quarter-finals in a month’s time. WMCC now have all three teams into quarter finals of respective cup competitions, what odds a presence in one or both of the competitions come finals day?
